The Sourdough Story
The Klondike Gold Rush made Sourdough bread famous, as it was the most popular and practical food for the pioneer and prospector. As prospectors could not rely on purchasing yeast, they learned to make a sourdough starter with wild yeasts the winds would carry by. Using only part of the starter and adding flour and water, they would make a batter for bread and other baked items. More flour and water would be added to the sourdough pot that contained the remaining starter to keep it going. This made sourdough a continuous food source.
Prospectors guarded their sourdough pot fiercely and kept it warm, in order to keep the starter alive. Many went as far as sleeping with it close to their body during freezing weather and wearing a bit of starter in a pouch around their neck. And thus, Alaskan gold miners and prospectors became known as “Sourdoughs”.
